Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
  • What is the format of an IMSI?

The IMSI is a fixed 15-digit length. It consists of a 3-digit Mobile Country Code (MCC), a 3-digit Mobile Network Code (MNC), and a 9-digit Mobile Station Identification Number (MSIN). Telcordia Technologies is responsible for the assignment and administration of the first six digits (the MCC + MNC) to network operators, and the network operator to which these digits are assigned is responsible for the assignment and administration of the last 9 digits (the MSIN).

  • What is an HNI?

An HNI (Home Network Identifier) is the name given to the combined first six digits of the IMSI - the MCC + MNC. An HNI is unique to a country with multiple assigned MCCs, such as the United States. Since there are multiple assigned MCCs, the MCC + MNC, i.e., the HNI, must both be analyzed to determine the Home Location Register (HLR).

  • Does Telcordia Technologies assign IMSIs for Canada?

Canadian IMSIs are obtained by contacting SAIC-Canada, the Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNA). Contact Glen Pilley, SAIC-Canada, on 613-563-7242 to obtain an IMSI for use within Canada.

  • What is the fee for the assignment of an HNI?

There is a $250 non-refundable application processing fee which is payable to Telcordia Technologies. You will be contacted by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) regarding a separate maintenance fee.

  • How long does it take to have an HNI assigned?

Telcordia Technologies will issue your HNI to you within 10 working days of receipt of a properly completed application.

  • How do I return an HNI or have the assignee information for the HNI changed?

To return an HNI, complete Form F. To have the assignee information changed, complete Form D.

  • Where can additional information be found regarding HNI assignments?

Additional information regarding HNI assignments can be found under the ""View Assignments"" section on the IMSI Home Page. Contact the IMSI Administrator and request a password to view assignments.
